Auburn, N.Y. – The second-seeded Ithaca Bombers pounded out 19 hits in a 7-1 win over third-seeded St. John Fisher in the NCAA New York Regional at Auburn's Falcon Park. The Bombers advance to play the Cortland/Trinity (Conn.) winner Friday at noon. St. John Fisher will face Skidmore at 7 p.m. in Thursday's final game.
Sophomore
Adam Brown (Greece Athena/Rochester) threw a complete-game four-hitter, allowing only an unearned run. He fanned four and walked one, picking up his second complete-game win over the Cardinals of the season.
Junior outfielder
Eric Ferguson (Columbia/East Greenbush) singled four times, scored three runs and stole a base to pace the Bomber offense. Junior catcher
Rob Raux (Ilion/Frankfort), senior center fielder
Eric Maya (Rome Free Academy/Rome) and junior shortstop
Josh Smith (Pulaski/Pulaski) added three hits apiece.
Smith and
Raux both drove in a pair of runs.
Smith and junior designated hitter
Shane Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) each singled in a run in Ithaca's four-run third,
Maya hit a sacrifice fly and junior third baseman
Todd Czerno (Columbia/Brainard) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Freshman leftfielder
Josh Quartironi (Williamsville East/Williamsville) scored the Cardinals' run in the sixth, coming around on a double by junior second baseman
Chad King (C. W. Baker/Plainsville).
King was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple, ending the inning. St. John Fisher never threatened again as
Brown retired nine of the next 10 batters.
Raux hit an RBI double in the fifth and added a run-scoring single in the eighth. Sophomore outfielder
Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) also singled in a run in the eighth.
St. John Fisher is making the program's first NCAA postseason appearance. The Bombers are in the NCAA playoffs for the 41st time; their 30 trips to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament are the most of any school.
